Leonardo da Vinci Biography
Leonardo di Ser Piero da Vinci, commonly known as Leonardo da Vinci,was born April 15, 1452, in a village near Florence, Italy, called Vinci. He was born to a peasant woman by the name of Caterina, and an attorney and notary, named Ser Piero da Vinci. When da Vinci was a young child , his mother left him and his father and started a new family. Da Vinci's uncle stepped in and helped raise him.
Da Vinci received the basic education of reading and writing. When he was about 15 years of age, he began to be trained by Andrea del Verrocchio. Together they made The Baptism of Christ in 1472.
Leonardo made many magnificent masterpieces through the course of his lifetime. The Tobias and the Angel, made in the years 1470-80, is his first most important piece. Another famous work, The Last Supper, made in the years 1495-97, is not only beautiful religious relic, but also a very ironic piece. Da Vinci did not take much interest in religion. One of his most iconic paintings is the Mona Lisa, painted in 1503-06. It is uncertain who the mysterious woman in the portrait is. However, all of Mona Lisa’s facial features match up with those of da Vinci.
Not only was da Vinci an excellent artist, he also excelled in anatomy, astronomy, botany, geology, geometry, and optics. He made many weapons for war even though he did not agree with the idea of war and fighting. For example he made Parachutes, armored tanks, giant crossbows, an eight-barrelled machine gun, and a machine for storming walls.
Da vinci painted his last painting in 1513-16 and died in 1519. His inventions and advancements affect our world today and will live on forever.
